Haitian Association of Toronto

Haitian Association of Toronto

A community and cultural organization founded in 1972 whose mission is to welcome, educate, integrate, and improve the living conditions of people of Haitian, Afro-descendant, and immigrant origin. Our purpose is to create a gathering space for all individuals of Haitian origin in the Greater Toronto Area and to develop services and programs that address the needs of the Haitian community, Black Francophone and allophones throughout the region.

History

about us

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of Haitian professionals and socio-professionals came together with the objective of responding to the needs of newly arrived immigrants from Haiti. The initiative also aimed to establish a cultural centre to promote mutual support within the community, as well as to showcase Haitian culture and gastronomy.

Leadership

about us

The organization is governed by a leadership team composed of executive officers, administrative staff, project management, and advisory members. Each role contributes to decision-making, oversight, and operational execution.

Our organization was inspired by the growing needs of Haitian-origin individuals, Black Francophones, and allophones in the Greater Toronto Area, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many newcomers and families experienced isolation, economic hardship, language barriers, limited access to culturally appropriate services, and a lack of spaces where they felt represented and supported. At the same time, we recognized the absence of a strong community hub dedicated to promoting Haitian culture, supporting Francophone integration, and empowering youth and families.
